All in all, a fresh and atmospheric distillation of a couple of days that really did change the course of history. Particularly effective is the show’s use of the experiences of just one ship, HMS Worcester, to “unlock” the wider story of the evacuation. They explore everything from the German army’s Blitzkrieg tactics to the extraordinary decision by the Nazi High Command to halt their advance on Dunkirk at the very moment they could have secured victory. Together with his knowledgeable co-hosts – military historian Lucy Betteridge-Dyson and former Royal Marine Commando Arthur Williams – O’Leary focuses on May 31 and June 1, 1940, a key 48 hours in the punishing 10-day Operation Dynamo. “In every battle of every war there is a defining moment when victory is seized,” he says with enthusiasm, focusing tonight on the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, which, as we all already know, pulled Britain back from the brink of a devastating defeat in the early stages of the Second World War.
